Carmen and Rafa, owners of Hogar El Chaparral animal sanctuary, received a desperate phone call from a friend late December 2018. The police found one-year-old Melita in a critical state with serious wounds from directly beneath her tail all the way down her legs. Something they could only imagine was done by an extremely disturbed person. You can see in the images below that her halter had clearly not been removed in an unhealthy amount of time. With high risk of a dangerous infection, they urgently rushed Melita to the animal hospital. She was in serious pain while the antibiotics took a couple of days to be in full effect. The vet had to then reconstruct the vulva and anus which are extremely delicate and costly procedures.

Carmen and Rafa turned to the help of their followers for the first time after paying half of the bills upfront and needing to come up with the other half before Melita could be discharged. Melita was admitted for approximately 2 weeks and billing 1,500 euros. With the help from Hogar El Chaparral’s kind supporters, Carmen and Rafa were able to cover the medical expenses.

We are overwhelmingly grateful for people like Carmen who take action to save these animals lives and help them heal in all ways. Melita is now 100% recovered and is one of the most playful and happy ponies we have ever met.
